Equal Pay Day Action Alert - Wear Red!

Every year in April, Business and Professional Women/USA and hundreds of other organizations ? women?s, civil rights, labor, and community ? team up with the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) for a national day of action promoting fair pay: Equal Pay Day.

Pay equity continues to be an issue of economic justice for women and minorities in America. April symbolizes the month when women's wages catch up to men's wages from the previous year. Achieving fair pay for women and minorities continues to be a struggle for the U.S. The problem is complex. In some instances, women and people of color do not receive equal pay for doing the same job as their male or white counterparts. When parking lot attendants are paid more than child care workers, we know the work women and people of color do is undervalued.
Overall in 2006, the median annual earnings of women were only 77 percent of men's salaries. The gap is even worse for women of color. African American women make 66 percent, Latinas make 55 cents and Asian American make 80 percent of men's salaries.
Because of the widespread impact of the pay equity problem, Downtown Chicago BPW has teamed up with Chicago NOW in order to bring awareness and encourage all of our members and friends to take action.

This year, Downtown Chicago BPW would like to encourage its members to take two actions to bring awareness to this important issue:

  • Wear red on April 22nd to symbolize the fact that women remain ?in red? until pay equity is achieved. Use the BPW Equal Pay Day FAQs to tell your friends and co-workers why this is an important issue.
  • Send a letter to the editor of your local, hometown or neighborhood newspaper to raise awareness about Equal Pay Day explaining why this issue matters to YOU and how it has impacted your life.

In order to measure the success of this program, please send a copy of the editorials to us ? we?ll compile a list of publications for review at our next meeting.
